Padres 2, Dodgers 1

SAN DIEGO -- Justin Upton broke up a 1-1 tie with a solo homer to left-center with two out in the eighth inning Saturday night to give the Padres a 2-1 victory over the Dodgers and right-handed ace Zack Greinke at Petco Park.

Upton's 13th home run of the season carried 406 feet to the entrance to the Padres bullpen.

The home run halted the Dodgers four-game winning streak and gave the Padres only their fourth win in 11 games against the Dodgers this season.

The win was also the Padres first against Greinke, who entered the game with a 5-0 record against them with a 1.53 earned run average in 10 starts.

Greinke (5-2) allowed two runs on eight hits over eight innings. He issued one walk and struck out six Padres.

Right-handed reliever Brandon Maurer (4-0) got the win for the Padres with his 20th scoreless outing in his last 21 appearances. Right-handed closer Craig Kimbrel got his 16th save in 17 opportunities.

The Padres took a quick 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Center fielder Will Venable doubled to right-center with one out and advanced to third on Upton's ground out to second. Matt Kemp topped a roller up the third-base line that was fielded by Greinke. But the pitcher's throw sailed past first baseman Adrian Gonzalez. Kemp was credited with an RBI single.

The Dodgers tied the game with one swing of Yasmani Grandal's bat in the bottom of the third. The former Padres catcher led off the inning with a 379-foot homer to right. It was his seventh homer of the season -- and the 13th served up by Kennedy in 11 starts.

But Kennedy matched Greinke through seven innings.

The Dodgers had only four hits off Kennedy in seven innings. Kennedy, who opened the game with a 6.48 earned-run average, hit one batter and issued one walk to go along with four strikeouts.

Aside from Grandal's home run, no other Dodger reached second through seven innings.
