Miller helps D-backs cruise past Padres
SAN DIEGO -- Right-hander Shelby Miller held the San Diego Padres to four hits over 7 1/3 innings, and Yasmany Tomas hit a three-run homer Tuesday night as the Arizona Diamondbacks cruised to an 11-2 win at Petco Park.
Chris Iannetta also homered for the Diamondbacks, who scored a third straight win. Meanwhile, the Padres suffered a fifth straight loss.
Miller issued two walks with five strikeouts while improving to 2-1. He allowed only two hits through the first six innings while retiring the Padres in order four times.
Padres right-handed starter Jarred Cosart (0-1) retired the first 10 Diamondbacks he faced. He was staked to a 1-0 lead when Wil Myers drove home Travis Jankowski with a two-out single in the third that extended the first baseman's hitting streak to nine straight games.
However, Cosart ran into a number of problems in the fourth and departed the game before the inning was over with a strained right hamstring muscle.
Singles by David Peralta and Tomas around a walk to Paul Goldschmidt loaded the bases with two out in the fourth. Cosart then walked Brandon Drury to force in the tying run. It was immediately after ball four to Drury that Cosart was escorted from the field by Padres trainers.
Reliever Craig Stammen got the first hitter he faced to roll the ball to the left side of the mound. But the pitcher threw wildly to first for a two-run error.
Cosart was charged with three runs (one earned) on two hits in 3 2/3 innings.
Arizona broke the game open with four runs in the fifth off Stammen, the final three coming on Tomas' second homer of the season, a 378-foot drive to left.
Miller (1-1) allowed one run, walked two and struck out five.
Peralta and A.J. Pollock each had two hits for Arizona. Jankowski added two hits for San Diego.
