Owings' slam helps Diamondbacks edge Padres
PHOENIX -- Arizona shortstop Chris Owings hit a grand slam, and David Peralta also homered as the Diamondbacks equaled the best home start in franchise history with a 7-6 victory over the San Diego Padres on Monday at Chase Field.
Arizona (13-8) is 9-2 at home and leads the majors with 112 runs. The Diamondbacks did not win their ninth home game last season until May 29.
Owings' slam in the fifth inning gave Arizona a 6-0 lead and helped Zack Greinke avenge a 1-0 complete-game loss at San Diego last Wednesday.
San Diego cut a six-run deficit to one on a three-run homer by Wil Myers in a four-run seventh inning and a bases-empty homer by Austin Hedges in the eighth. Arizona's Fernando Rodney pitched a 1-2-3 ninth for his sixth save in as many chances.
Peralta, who went 3-for-4, has 17 hits in his past 31 at-bats (.548). He has six extra-base hits in that span.
Greinke (2-2) gave up six hits and one run in six innings. He struck out 11 and did not walk a batter.
Yangervis Solarte had three hits for the Padres (8-13), who have lost three in a row and eight of 11.
Hedges has six homers, all in the past eight games.
Peralta hit his third homer with one out in the first inning for a 1-0 lead off starter Jhoulys Chacin, who gave up three singles in eight scoreless innings in a 1-0 victory over the Diamondbacks last Wednesday.
Yasmany Tomas doubled in Jake Lamb in the second inning to make it 2-0, and Owings hit his first career grand slam with two outs in the fifth inning for a six-run lead.
Greinke singled to right field to start the rally with two outs in the fifth before A.J. Pollock walked and Peralta singled.
With one out in the sixth inning, Solarte and Hunter Renfroe singled to put runners on the corners before Hedges' sacrifice fly drove in Solarte to break up Greinke's shutout. Hedges has 11 RBIs in his past 11 games.
Tomas singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning, took second on a groundout and scored on Chris Herrmann's single to right field.
Chacin (2-3) gave up seven runs on eight hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked two.
