Orioles 5, Tigers 3
The Baltimore Orioles got seven shutout innings from starter Jeremy Guthrie and a big sixth inning from their offense to drop the Detroit Tigers 5-3 on Saturday.
Guthrie (10-13) allowed five hits while striking out four and walking one, throwing 64 of his 105 pitches for strikes. He is now 7-3 in 11 starts since the All-Star break.
Koji Uehara worked a scoreless ninth to pick up his ninth save of the season.
Baltimore scattered hits all night but struggled to bring runners around. They had 16 hits but left 12 on base while hitting 5-for-13 with runners in scoring position. The Orioles broke out with four runs in the sixth thanks to an RBI double from Felix Pie and a two-run triple from Cesar Izturis.
Ty Wigginton added a sacrifice fly to score Baltimore’s fourth run.
Detroit’s Don Kelly had an RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning and Jhonny Peralta added a two-run double.
Tigers starter Max Scherzer (10-10) was dealt the loss.
