Angels 2, Yankees 1
Macier Izturis' pinch-hit sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted the Los Angeles Angels to a 2-1 victory over the New York Yankees on Friday.
Alberto Callaspo and Vernon Wells singled, and Peter Bourjos was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Izturis promptly lofted an offering from Luis Ayala to center field, which easily plated pinch-runner Jeremy Moore.
Howie Kendrick had an RBI single in the fifth for Los Angeles, which remained 2 1/2 games behind Texas in the American League West. The Rangers defeated Oakland 13-4 on Friday.
Rookie Jordan Walden (5-3) relieved a dominant Jered Weaver to retire the side in the ninth and pick up the victory. Weaver scattered three hits and struck out 11 in eight innings.
Rookie Jesus Montero belted his third homer in as many games for New York, which has lost three in a row but remained 2 1/2 games ahead of Boston in the American League East. The Red Sox dropped a 7-2 decision to the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday.
Aaron Laffey (2-2) took the loss after yielding Callaspo's hit in the ninth.
