Angels 6, Yankees 0

Dan Haren tossed his fourth complete game of the season and Jeff Mathis belted a two-run homer as the Los Angeles Angels denied CC Sabathia in his bid for his 20th win with a 6-0 triumph over the visiting New York Yankees on Saturday.

Torii Hunter launched his 20th homer of the season and Maicer Izturis, Erick Aybar and rookie Mike Trout drove in a run apiece for Los Angeles, which trimmed the deficit to 1 1/2 games behind American League West-leading Texas. The Rangers lost to the Oakland Athletics on Saturday afternoon.

After rookie Jesus Montero led off the second inning with a single, Haren (15-8) retired the next 18 batters before Eric Chavez singled in the eighth. Haren improved to 5-1 in his career against the Yankees after scattering four hits and striking out seven.

Veteran catcher Jorge Posada found himself behind the plate for the first time this season after Russell Martin exited with a mild right hand contusion.

Izturis, who drove in the winning run during Friday's game, opened the scoring with an RBI double in the second inning. Mathis' two-run homer highlighted a four-run seventh for the Angels.

Sabathia (19-8) permitted one run on eight hits in six innings for New York, which has dropped four in a row.

The Yankees maintained their 2 1/2-game lead over Boston in the American League East. The Red Sox dropped a 6-5 decision in 11 innings to the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.
