Nationals 3, Rockies 2

Jayson Werth singled in the go-ahead run in the top of the eighth as the visiting Washington Nationals edged the Colorado Rockies, 3-2, on Sunday.

Jonny Gomes added a two-run homer and Danny Espinosa doubled and scored for the Nationals, who earned a split of the four-game series.

Washington carried a 2-0 lead through most of the afternoon following Gomes’ two-run blast - his first homer since joining the Nationals prior to the trade deadline - in the second inning.

The Rockies stormed back to tie it in the seventh, pushing their first run across when first baseman Michael Morse’s error allowed Jonathan Herrera to score from third. Ty Wigginton tied it two batters later with an RBI single.

Washington bounced right back in the next half inning. Espinosa greeted Matt Belisle (5-4) with a leadoff double and Werth followed an intentional walk to Morse with his first RBI of the series.

Tyler Clippard (2-0) got credit for the win and Drew Storen earned his 29th save with a scoreless ninth.
