Jhonny Peralta hit a two-run walk-off home run in the bottom of the ninth, lifting Detroit to a comeback victory.
Alex Avila, who went 3-for-3 with a fourth-inning solo homer, reached on a one-out bloop single against Chicago reliever Matt Thornton (1-1). Peralta followed by taking a 0-2 pitch over the right-field wall, sending the White Sox to their eighth loss in 10 games.
Gordon Beckham homered and drove in three runs as visiting Chicago dropped 1 1/2 games behind Detroit in the American League Central standings.
Beckham broke a 2-2 tie with a two-out, two-run homer in the top of the seventh. He also had an RBI double in the third inning.
White Sox starter Jake Peavy, the AL Pitcher of the Month in April, allowed three runs on seven hits in 7 2/3 innings, striking out six and walking one. He departed after surrendering a two-out RBI single to Miguel Cabrera that made it 4-3 in the eighth inning.
Detroit starter Drew Smyly struck out seven without a walk while giving up two runs on seven hits in six innings.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Cabrera came in with a .143 career average (4-for-28) against Peavy but was 2-for-4 Friday ... Chicago announced before the game that Chris Sale, who was a reliever before being moved into the starting rotation this spring, will move to the bullpen for the rest of the season due to tenderness in his elbow ... Adam Dunn had a sacrifice fly for the White Sox ... Chicago has lost 11 of its last 13 games in Detroit.
