Braves 7, Marlins 1 (14): Justin Upton drove in three runs, including a pair with a tiebreaking double in the six-run 14th inning, as Atlanta claimed the opener of a three-game series at Miami.
Giancarlo Stanton's leadoff single in the bottom of the 13th was the first hit by either team after the sixth inning, as Miami relievers retired 24 straight batters before Chris Hatcher (0-1) issued a pair of walks ahead of Upton's double down the left-field line in the 14th. Gerald Laird added a two-run single and Chris Johnson also drove in a run in the big inning.
David Carpenter (2-0) earned the win with two scoreless innings. He worked out of a major jam in the 13th, getting a double-play ball from Logan Morrison and a flyout from Adeiny Hechavarria after allowing the first two batters to reach.
The Braves also got out of trouble in the sixth and seventh, as Mike Minor struck out Jeff Mathis to leave the bases loaded in the sixth and Jordan Walden stranded two men in scoring position in the seventh.
Minor allowed one run on six hits over 6 1/3 innings but remained winless in his last five starts. Six Atlanta relievers shut out the Marlins the rest of the way.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Braves C Brian McCann went 0-for-5 to end his hitting streak at eight games. … Marlins RHP Kevin Slowey allowed four hits over five scoreless innings in his first start since June 12, taking over Ricky Nolasco's spot in the rotation. … Hechavarria went 2-for-6 to extend his hitting streak to a season-high eight games.
