Phillies 4, Nationals 2

Phillies 4, Nationals 2: Cliff Lee struck out nine over eight innings and Kevin Frandsen capped a three-run sixth inning with a two-run single as Philadelphia notched its sixth straight home win.

Lee (9-2) allowed five hits to emerge victorious in his seventh straight decision, matching his longest win streak since July 30-Sept.5, 2011. Michael Young had three doubles, drove in a run and scored twice for Philadelphia, which has won two straight following a 3-7 road trip.

Former Phillie Jayson Werth and Jeff Kobernus each belted solo shots to account for Washington’s offense. Ross Detwiler (2-5) gave up four runs and seven hits over six frames – the first time in 10 outings this season he yielded more than three earned runs.

After Lee surrendered his first homer in six starts to Werth with two outs in the fourth inning, Ryan Howard got the run back in the bottom half with a sacrifice fly that plated Young. The game remained deadlocked until the sixth when Ben Revere reached on a bunt single and scored on Young’s second double of the game.

Detwiler’s sixth-inning struggles continued as Jimmy Rollins singled and Howard was hit by a pitch, setting the table for Frandsen’s sinking liner to left. Kobernus trimmed the deficit to 4-2 with his first major-league homer in the eighth, but Jonathan Papelbon worked around a two-out single in the ninth for his 14th save.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Young is one RBI shy of becoming the 19th active player and 242nd hitter in major-league history with 1,000 for his career. … Revere finished 1-for-4 and extended his hitting streak to nine games – a stretch during which the Phillies’ leadoff hitter is batting 17-for-41. … The start of the game was delayed for 1 hour and 14 minutes because of rain.
