White Sox 10, Indians 6 (11)
Alex Rios homered and tied a career high with five hits and Brent Lillibridge atoned for a costly throwing error with a go-ahead solo homer to give the Chicago White Sox a 10-6 win over the Cleveland Indians in 11 innings on Monday.
The White Sox won the opener of a critical 10-game road trip without Manny Ramirez, who will join the team on Tuesday. Ramirez was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers and will make his Chicago debut either Tuesday or Wednesday.
The Indians tied the game with three runs in the ninth off closer Bobby Jenks. Lillibridge threw the ball away on Luis Valbuena’s infield single, allowing Travis Hafner to score from second with the tying run. Lillibridge had entered in the seventh when regular second baseman Gordon Beckham bruised his right hand after getting hit by a pitch.
Lillibridge’s homer in the 11th – his third in 234 career at-bats - broke the tie and rattled reliever Rafael Perez (4-1), who was hammered for four runs after retiring the first two batters in the inning.
Scott Linebrink (2-1) pitched two scoreless innings for the win.
Cleveland’s Jayson Nix homered and Hafner had four hits, but the Indians lost for the 14th time in their last 21 games.
