Diamondbacks 3, Rockies 1
Kelly Johnson hit a two-run homer and Joe Saunders pitched eight solid innings to help the Arizona Diamondbacks defeat the visiting Colorado Rockies 3-1 on Tuesday night.
Johnson’s homer capped a three-run third inning. Ryan Roberts doubled in the first run and Johnson followed with an opposite-field homer to left field off Colorado left-hander Jorge De La Rosa.
Saunders (3-6) struck out seven and didn’t walk anybody. He gave up one run and six hits while winning for only the second time since August 3.
Saunders took a shutout into the eighth inning before the Rockies broke through on Miguel Olivo’s double and Ryan Spilborghs’ run-scoring single. But Saunders recovered by striking out Jonathan Herrera and Carlos Gonzalez to get out of the inning.
Arizona’s Juan Gutierrez struck out two in the ninth for his 11th save.
Adam LaRoche struck out to end the sixth for Arizona’s 1,400th strikeout of the season, surpassing the previous mark of 1,399 held by the 2001 Milwaukee Brewers.
De La Rosa (8-5) gave up three runs and six hits in seven innings.
