Reds 6, Brewers 1
Rookie Aroldis Chapman worked one inning of perfect relief to earn his first major league win and the Cincinnati Reds completed a three-game sweep of the Milwaukee Brewers with a 6-1 victory on Wednesday.
Cincinnati (78-55) trailed by a run heading into the seventh inning before erupting for six runs to extend its lead to eight games over the St. Louis Cardinals in the NL Central.
Miguel Cairo tied the game in the bottom of the seventh with an RBI double, bringing around Brandon Phillips from first base. That run, his 93rd of the year, moved Phillips ahead of St. Louis slugger Albert Pujols for the National League lead.
Ryan Hanigan came on as a pinch hitter later in the inning and swatted a huge three-run shot to deep left and Scott Rolen added a two-run single.
The Reds got six innings from Johnny Cueto, who allowed one run and five hits while striking out two and walking one.
Chapman faced just three batters and struck out two with 102 miles-per-hour fastballs and nasty sliders.
The Brewers received 6 1/3 shutout innings from Chris Narveson, who struck out six and walked two while picking up two hits himself. He drove in Milwaukee’s only run in the top of the fifth inning.
Todd Coffey (2-3) permitted three runs and three hits without retiring a batter to take the loss.
