White Sox 9, Athletics 4

Adam Dunn and Paul Konerko belted home runs and Mark Buehrle threw seven solid innings to lead the Chicago White Sox to a 9-4 home win over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday.

The loss spoiled Bob Melvin's first game as interim manager of the Athletics, who have lost 10 in a row.

Buehrle (6-4) posted his eighth consecutive quality start and has won five of his past six decisions. He improved to 6-13 against Oakland.

Melvin replaced Bob Geren, who was fired on Thursday, but the move didn't immediately change Oakland's fortunes. The Athletics have just four extra-base hits over their past four games and have been held to three runs or fewer seven times during their losing streak.

Hideki Matsui had the only extra-base hit for Oakland, going 2-for-3 with a home run to break a 1-for-22 slump.

Athletics starter Trevor Cahill (6-4) lost his fourth straight decision, including two against the White Sox. He hasn't won since May 9.

Oakland has lost 16 of 21 overall, while the White Sox have won seven of 10.

Chicago's Carlos Quentin extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the sixth.
