Pirates 10, Cubs 0
Paul Maholm turned in a three-hit shutout and was supported by four home runs as the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates pounded the Chicago Cubs, 10-0, on Saturday.
Ronny Cedeno provided the biggest blast, capping a five-run rally with a three-run homer, and Andrew McCutchen added his ninth for the Pirates, who improved to 15-12 on the road. They won 17 road games overall last season.
Maholm (2-7), who had received a total of 14 runs of support over his first 10 outings, cruised against the Cubs. The veteran lefthander needed only 91 pitches in his third career shutout and struck out four without walking a batter in his first complete game of 2011.
Randy Wells (1-1) was making his second start of the season for the Cubs after nearly eight weeks on the disabled list with a strained right forearm. He finally came undone in the fourth inning on Saturday, yielding a two-run single to Steve Pearce to begin the rally and Cedeno’s blast two batters later to make it 5-0.
Solo homers from Lyle Overbay and Chris Snyder stretched the lead in the sixth and McCutchen’s two-run shot in the seventh turned it into a blow out.
