Diamondbacks 2, Rockies 1
Chris Young had a single in the sixth inning to snap a tie and robbed Ty Wigginton of a homer in the eighth as the Arizona Diamondbacks notched a 2-1 victory over the host Colorado Rockies on Wednesday.
Young’s two-out single in the sixth capped an inning in which Arizona scored two unearned runs off hard-luck Rockies starter Jason Hammel. Young then jumped above the center-field fence with two outs in the eighth to rob Wigginton of a game-tying homer.
Ian Kennedy (6-1) gave up one run and seven hits in eight innings while winning his fifth straight decision. The effort helped lift the Diamondbacks (25-24) above the .500 mark for the first time since Opening Day.
J.J. Putz pitched a perfect ninth for his 14th save of the season.
Alfredo Amezaga’s throwing error set up Arizona’s two-run sixth inning. Ryan Roberts reached on the error by Amezaga, who was playing shortstop, and Roberts advanced to third on Kelly Johnson’s double and scored on Justin Upton’s infield grounder. Young later singled home Johnson from third.
Colorado took a 1-0 lead in the fourth when Seth Smith doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on Todd Helton’s sacrifice fly.
Hammel (3-4) gave up just five hits and two unearned runs in seven innings. He also struck out five and walked two.
