Tigers 4, Blue Jays 2

Jhonny Peralta's eighth-inning triple led the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 win over the visiting Toronto Blue Jays on Monday night.

With the score tied 2-2 and Austin Jackson on second base, Peralta lofted a pitch from Jays reliever Shawn Camp into shallow right field. Jose Bautista attempted to make a diving catch but the ball eluded him and bounded to the wall, scoring Jackson easily with the go-ahead run.

Joaquin Benoit (2-3) earned the win with an inning of scoreless relief and Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his 18th save in as many chances.

Toronto's Mark Rzepczynski (2-2) took the loss after allowing Jackson to reach base in the eighth.

Detroit rallied without manager Jim Leyland, who was ejected following a bizarre call in the seventh inning. Center fielder Andy Dirks was initially ruled safe at first base on a close play, but was called out when the home-plate umpire overruled the call by the first-base umpire.

Leyland spent several minutes berating the umpiring crew, mimicking the "safe-out" call before getting the heave-ho to a chorus of cheers from the crowd at Comerica Park.

Detroit starter Max Scherzer was denied his 10th win of the season despite limiting Toronto to two runs on six hits while striking out nine over seven innings. Blue Jays counterpart Zach Stewart was charged with two runs on nine hits over six frames in his third major league start.
