CC Sabathia pitched eight strong innings and host New York scored three runs when Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones dropped a fly ball in the seventh to break a 2-2 tie.

Sabathia struck out nine and did not walk a batter while allowing two runs - one earned - and eight hits. Kevin Youkilis went 3-for-3 with an RBI and Robinson Cano drove in a run for the Yankees, who turned a 4-6-5-6-5-3-4

Manny Machado had two hits and an RBI and Miguel Gonzalez allowed three runs - two earned - and five hits in six-plus innings for the Orioles.

New York broke the game open in the seventh when Vernon Wells hit a deep drive to straightaway center field with the bases loaded and two outs. Jones had a bead on it, but the ball bounced off his glove.

Machado and Youkilis traded RBI singles in their respective halves of the third inning and the Yankees grabbed a 2-1 lead on Cano’s RBI single in the fifth. The Orioles got an unearned run back in the seventh to tie the score. Matt Wieters’ reached on Youkilis’ fielding error and eventually came in on J.J. Hardy’s single to center.

GAME NOTEBOOK:
Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his second save. …Yankees SS Eduardo Nunez, who missed two starts last week after being hit by a pitch in the right biceps, was removed in the third inning after taking a pitch off the right wrist. X-rays were negative and he was replaced in the field by Jayson Nix in the third inning. … Baltimore claimed RHP Alex Burnett off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays and optioned him to Triple-A Norfolk.
