Orioles 5, Yankees 3
Ryan Flaherty, Nick Markakis and Nolan Reimold each homered and Jason Hammel pitched six solid innings to lead visiting Baltimore past New York.
Adam Jones, whose error led to the Yankees getting the win in Friday’s series opener, recorded two hits, an RBI and a run scored as the Orioles picked up their third win in the last four games. Hammel (2-1) allowed three runs - two earned - and eight hits.
Phil Hughes (0-2) was pushed up for the second straight time to fill in for an injured starter - this time Andy Pettitte (back spasms) - and was reached for five runs and nine hits in three-plus innings. Travis Hafner and Vernon Wells each hit a solo homer for the Yankees.
Jones got Baltimore on the board with an RBI groundout in the first and Flaherty’s blast to right-center in the second made it 2-0. New York battled back to tie it with a pair of runs in the second, but Hughes could not hold off the Orioles.
Markakis led off the third and ripped a 2-1 fastball into the stands in right to begin a two-run rally. Reimold sent another fastball from Hughes into the bullpen in right-center leading off the fourth to make it a 5-2 gap.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jim Johnson worked the ninth to pick up his fifth save in as many opportunities. … Yankees SS Eduardo Nunez (wrist) was unavailable, leaving Jayson Nix to start at short. New York pinch hit for Nix in the eighth and Robinson Cano moved to shortstop for the ninth, with Francisco Cervelli coming out from behind the plate to cover second. Neither Cano, who had ever played any other position in the field but second base for the Yankees, nor Cervelli was forced to make a play in the field. … Yankees 3B Kevin Youkilis went 0-for-5 to snap his nine-game hitting streak.
