Braves 1, Phillies 0

Kris Medlen took a no-hitter into the sixth inning and Chris Johnson homered to lead host Atlanta past Philadelphia.

Medlen (15-12) lost his no-hit bid when Cesar Hernandez had an infield single with two outs in the sixth but faced just one batter over the minimum in eight dominant frames to outduel Cliff Lee. Medlen yielded two hits and two walks while striking out seven and Craig Kimbrel worked a perfect ninth for his 50th save as the Braves stayed on top in their pursuit of home-field advantage throughout the National League playoffs.

Lee (14-8) was nearly as good, letting up only two singles in the second inning and a solo shot to Johnson on an 0-2 pitch to begin the eighth. Lee struck out 13 and has fanned 54 batters while issuing only one walk in five September outings.

Medlen induced a double play after issuing his first walk and Hernandez was caught stealing after his single in the sixth. After Chase Utley singled off Medlen in the seventh, Carlos Ruiz hit into another double play.

After surrendering the two hits in the second, Lee set down 16 in a row - including 11 by strikeout. That run ended when Johnson smacked his 12th of the season over the wall in left.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Atlanta (95-65), which is even with St. Louis for the best record in the NL, owns the tiebreaker by virtue of winning the season series against the Cardinals. ... Braves C Brian McCann, who left Thursday's game with a strained adductor, is expected to miss the remainder of the series but should be ready for the playoffs. ... Atlanta 2B Dan Uggla struck out in all three of his at-bats to break his own franchise record of 168 set last season.
