Giants 7, Cubs 6
Angel Pagan and Pablo Sandoval each drove in a pair of runs as visiting San Francisco overcame a five-run deficit to take the series opener from Chicago.
Ryan Vogelsong (1-1) allowed five runs - four earned - and eight hits in six innings to pick up the win and drew a bases-loaded walk to force in the tying run in the fifth for the Giants, who have won four straight.
Anthony Rizzo hit a two-run homer and Brent Lillibridge drove in two as the Cubs fell for the fifth time in the last six games. Scott Feldman (0-2) lasted 4 1/3 innings and did not get a lot of help from his defense, yielding six runs - two earned - and seven hits to suffer the loss.
San Francisco was down 5-0 after the third inning but began to climb back into the game in the fourth. Feldman looked like he would escape the inning unscathed but shortstop Starlin Castro’s two-out fielding error allowed Vogelsong to reach and force in a run, and Pagan followed with an RBI single before Sandoval reached for a breaking ball off the plate and sent it out to left-center field for a two-run double.
A hit and a walk with one out in the fifth ended Feldman’s afternoon, and Hisanori Takahashi allowed a single to load the bases before walking Vogelsong to force in the tying run. Pagan followed with a sacrifice fly and Brandon Crawford capped the three-run rally with an RBI single.
GAME NOTEBOOK: San Francisco RHP Sergio Romo worked around a one-out double in the ninth to earn his sixth save in as many chances. … Cubs prospect Jorge Soler was suspended five games by the Class A Florida State League for leaving the dugout and with a bat following an altercation with an opposing player. … Chicago owner Tom Ricketts was sent a goat’s head at Wrigley Field. The Cubs, who have been trying to break the supposed “Curse of the Billy Goat” for decades, turned it over to police.
