Cubs 1, Giants 0

Cubs 1, Giants 0:
Nate Schierholtz launched a solo home run with one out in the ninth inning to lift visiting Chicago to its second straight dramatic win in San Francisco.

One night after scoring twice in the top of the ninth to steal a 3-2 win in the series opener, the Cubs managed to keep the game scoreless in the eighth as Pedro Strop (1-3) wiggled out of a bases-loaded, none-out jam by getting a pair of forceouts at home and striking out Hunter Pence.

Schierholtz rewarded the Cubs in his next at-bat, slugging a 3-2 fastball from Sergio Romo (3-6) into the first row above the high wall in right field. The Giants loaded the bases again with one out in the ninth before Kevin Gregg induced a game-ending 3-2-3 double play to pick up his 21st save.

Madison Bumgarner tossed eight scoreless innings for San Francisco. Counterpart Chris Rusin matched him through seven frames before turning it over to Strop, who retired Buster Posey, Pablo Sandoval and Pence with the bases loaded in the eighth.

Romo, who was on the mound when first baseman Brandon Belt committed a two-run error that gave the Cubs the win on Friday, got the first out in the ninth before serving up Schierholtz's blast. A single and two walks loaded the bases in the bottom half, but Gregg escaped as Chicago claimed a one-run win for the third time in four games.

GAME NOTEBOOK: Schierholtz hit 23 home runs in six seasons with San Francisco. He has 14 in 85 games with Chicago this year. ... The Giants have hit only three home runs in their last 23 home games. ... After the series finale Sunday afternoon, San Francisco travels to Washington, D.C. for a visit to the White House.
