Ian Kinsler went 4-for-5 and scored the decisive run on a balk in the 10th inning to lead visiting Texas over Seattle for the second straight night.
Kinsler singled with one out in the 10th, moved to second on Adrian Beltre’s single and stole third base. Home-plate umpire C.B. Bucknor then called a two-out balk on Danny Farquhar (0-2) when the left shoulder of the Mariners reliever slightly flinched as he looked in toward home plate.
Tanner Scheppers (6-2) entered with two on and none out in the ninth and recorded three straight outs, and Joe Nathan allowed two runners to reach in the bottom of the 10th before retiring Michael Saunders on a grounder for his 38th save in 40 opportunities. Texas maintained its 2 1/2-game lead over the Oakland Athletics in the American League West while Seattle dropped to 0-5 since manager Eric Wedge returned from a stroke.
The Mariners scored two first-inning runs off Rangers starter Derek Holland on Kendrys Morales’ double and Justin Smoak’s sacrifice fly. Mitch Moreland, David Murphy and Elvis Andrus all delivered run-scoring singles in the second to give Texas a 3-2 edge before Seattle’s Franklin Gutierrez homered to center in the third.
Holland allowed three runs and six hits in six innings, while Seattle’s Hisashi Iwakuma gave up three runs and seven hits in six frames.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Seattle 2B Nick Franklin was held out of the starting lineup after three consecutive hitless outings and struck out as a pinch hitter in the ninth. … Rangers OF Leonys Martin (ankle) returned from a two-game absence and went 0-for-5. … Mariners C Mike Zunino began a rehab stint at Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday and could return to the majors next week.
