Padres 16, Rockies 3
DENVER -- Matt Kemp added to his gaudy history at Coors Field with two home runs and a career-high tying six RBIs as the San Diego Padres pounded the Colorado Rockies 16-3 on Saturday.
It was the second straight offensive uprising for the Padres, who thrashed the Rockies 13-6 on Friday and ended a major league record 30-inning scoreless streak to start the season.
After managing 11 hits in three shutout losses, the Padres have piled up 37 in two days against the Rockies, including 19 on Saturday. In addition to Kemp's two homers, Corey Spangenberg and Wil Myers also went deep for the Padres.
Trevor Story's jaw-dropping home run streak ended as he went 1-for-5 with three strikeouts. He is the first player in major league history to homer in the first four games of his career and hit six homers in that span.
Spangenberg, who had four RBIs, hit a three-run homer in the fourth as did Kemp when the Rockies batted around against starter Jorge De La Rosa (0-1) and built a 7-0 lead.
The beneficiary of this offense was Drew Pomeranz (1-0), who pitched five innings and gave up two runs. He began his major league career with the Rockies in 2011 shortly after they acquired from the Cleveland Indians in a deal for pitcher Ubaldo Jimenez.
Kemp, who went 3-for-5, singled home two runs as the Padres scored three in the sixth to take a 10-2 lead. After going 7-for-10 with three homers and 10 RBIs in the first two games of this series, Kemp is hitting .339 with 21 doubles, five triples, 19 home runs, 73 RBIs and 56 runs scored in 74 games at Coors Field.
Myers hit his first homer to open the six-run ninth that included a three-run double by Jon Jay.
Three home runs propelled the Padres to an early 7-0 lead. Kemp hit his first home run of the game in the third.
The Padres unloaded on De La Rosa for six runs in the fourth as pangenberg and Kemp each hit three-run homers while the Padres batted around.
That rally began with back-to-back singles by Yangervis Solarte and Derek Norris. Spangenberg's first homer of the season was also the first at Coors Field that cleared the fence in right-center that was raised nearly 9 feet this season.
Pomeranz, who grounded out to end the second after De La Rosa walked the bases full, singled. After Melvin Upton Jr., singled with one out, Kemp drove his second homer of the game, third of the season and third in two games beyond the fence in right-center.
It was Kemp's eighth career multi-homer game and first with the Padres, his fourth such game against the Rockies and second at Coors Field.
The six-run inning was the second in two days for the Padres. They broke their major league record 30-inning scoreless streak to start a season with a six-run fourth Friday.
The Rockies cut into the Padres' big lead with two runs in their half of the fourth. Ryan Raburn's sacrifice fly and Pomeranz's wild pitch brought home Nolan Arenado, who walked with one out, and Mark Reynolds, who doubled.
After Reynolds' double, Nick Hundley walked and Brandon Barnes doubled. Cristhian Adames pinch hit for De La Rosa, fell into a 0-2 hole but walked to load the bases for DJ LeMahieu, who grounded out on Pomeranz's first pitch.
In addition to the three homers, De La Rosa gave up seven hits and five walks and needed 97 pitches to get through four innings. De La Rosa, the Rockies' opening day starter, has a 12.46 ERA in two outings.
