Descalso's two-out single in ninth lifts Rockies

DENVER -- Pinch-hitter Daniel Descalso singled off the wall in center field with two outs in the ninth inning on Friday night to give the Colorado Rockies an 8-7 win over the San Diego Padres.

The walk-off win was the Rockies' second straight at Coors Field and came after a disappointing 2-5 road trip that ended with three straight losses at Arizona.

Padres closer Brandon Maurer (0-5) came on in the ninth and gave up three runs and five hits. He allowed a one-out double to DJ LeMahieu and a two-out single to Carlos Gonzalez to make it a one-run game.

Pinch-hitter David Dahl singled on a seven-pitch at-bat, Nick Hundley tied the score by grounding a single to left on a nine-pitch at-bat and setting the stage for Descalso, who is 9-for-23 with two homers and five RBIs as a pinch hitter.

Rockies starter Tyler Chatwood, who faced two batters in the sixth, gave up seven runs and became the fourth straight Rockies starter to work five or fewer innings. He yielded a two-run homer to Wil Myers in the first and a solo homer to Luis Sardinas in the sixth that put the Padres ahead 7-4.

The Rockies scored four runs in the second off Christian Friedrich, giving Chatwood a 4-2 lead that he quickly lost in the third when he walked two batters, hit another one, and all three runners scored as Alex Dickerson lifted a two-run single into short right field. Sardinas ran hard to stay out of a double play, allowing a run to score on the fielder's choice.

Friedrich, who was Colorado's first-round draft pick in 2008, worked five innings, all scoreless save for a four-run second that ended his streak of not allowing an earned run to the Rockies this season at 14 innings in three starts.

The four runs scored with two outs, the final three on LeMahieu's double after Chatwood singled home the first run of the inning. LeMahieu went 3-for-5 to raise his average to .3488, putting him slightly behind Washington's Daniel Murphy (.3492) in the National League batting race.

Adam Ottavino (1-2) retired the one batter he faced in the ninth and was the winning pitcher.

Sardinas led off the sixth with his second homer, putting the Padres ahead 7-4. Chatwood then allowed a single that finished his outing.

Travis Jankowski doubled with two outs in the fourth and scored on Jon Jay's single to give San Diego a 6-4 lead.

Chatwood loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batter with one in the third, and three runners scored, putting the Padres ahead 5-4.

Dickerson lifted a two-run single into short right field to tie the score at 4. The go-ahead run scored when a hustling Sardinas beat the throw to first, preventing the Rockies from turning a double play on his grounder.

The Rockies struck for four runs with two outs in the second to take a 4-2 lead. LeMahieu's three-run double highlighted the rally that ended Friedrich's streak at 14 innings without allowing an earned run to the Rockies this season.

Five straight batters reached base with two outs starting with Stephen Cardullo, who doubled off the wall in left-center. After Cristhian Adames walked, Chatwood grounded a run-scoring single through the hole at shortstop.

Friedrich walked Charlie Blackmon to load the bases, and LeMahieu cleared them with his 29th double of the season.

Myers gave the Padres a 2-0 lead with a two-run homer, his 25th of the season in the first. Jay, who scored ahead of Myers, reached second on a fielder's choice as Jankowski, who opened the game with a first-pitch double, was tagged out in a rundown that went 1-6-5-6.
