Reynolds' homer pushes Rockies past Padres
DENVER -- Mark Reynolds hit a tiebreaking, solo home run in the seventh inning, leading the Colorado Rockies to a 2-1 win over the San Diego Padres on Sunday.
Colorado won its second in a row to capture the three-series. San Diego fell to 1-20 in series finales and 0-10 on Sunday.
Reynolds stepped to the plate to lead off the seventh with 240 career homers but just three in in 212 plate appearances this season. He drove the first pitch from Kevin Quackenbush (3-3) over the out-of-town scoreboard in right field to put the Rockies ahead 2-1.
Colorado left-hander Tyler Anderson was extremely impressive in his major league debut. However, he was denied a win when Gonzalez Germen relieved him in the top of the seventh and allowed an inherited runner to score the tying run.
Anderson gave up six hits and one run in 6 1/3 innings with no walks and six strikeouts. He gave up a leadoff double in the seventh to Alexei Ramirez and turned matters over to Germen (2-0) with one out.
Germen retired pinch hitter Hector Sanchez on a popout but walked pinch hitter Alexi Amarista. Jon Jay lined a first-pitch single that tied the game at 1.
With newly anointed Rockies closer Carlos Estevez unavailable -- he pitched two consecutive days and four of the past five -- Jason Motte began the ninth. Motte issued a two-out walk and gave way to left-hander Boone Logan with left-handed-hitting Amarista due up.
Switch-hitting Yangervis Solarte hit for Amarista, and Logan got him to ground out to earn his third career save and first since May 12, 2012, when he was pitching for the New York Yankees.
Anderson was opposed by Christian Friedrich in a matchup of left-handers who were former Rockies first-round draft picks. Colorado took Friedrich in in 2008 and Anderson in 2011.
Rockies center fielder Charlie Blackmon kept the Padres from tying the game in the eighth with a highlight-reel catch. After Matt Kemp led off with a single, Blackmon ran into right-center and made a lunging grab of Derek Norris' drive. Melvin Upton Jr. then grounded into an inning-ending double play.
Friedrich gave up a bases-loaded walk to Ryan Raburn that forced in an unearned run in the sixth, his final inning. Friedrich gave up two hits with three walks and nine strikeouts, one shy of his career high. He retired 15 consecutive batters after issuing a first-inning walk and allowed just two balls to be hit to the outfield in that stretch.
