Dietrich, Marlins too strong for Wheeler, Mets
NEW YORK -- Derek Dietrich collected three RBIs and Christian Yelich hit a two-run homer Friday night as the Miami Marlins ruined the major league return of New York Mets right-hander Zack Wheeler in a 7-2 win at Citi Field.
Wheeler (0-1) gave up five runs, six hits and one walk while striking out four in four innings in his first major league start since Sept. 25, 2014. He underwent Tommy John surgery in March 2015 and pitched in just one minor league game last season while battling nerve irritation in his elbow and a flexor strain.
Dietrich opened Miami's scoring off Wheeler with a two-run triple in the second inning. Yelich hit a two-run homer in the third, and Marcell Ozuna (3-for-4) and Dietrich produced consecutive RBI singles in the fifth in a rally that began with a one-out single by Yelich.
Left-hander Wei-Yin Chen (1-0) thrived both on the mound and at the plate for the Marlins. Chen allowed one run on seven hits and one walk while striking out five over six innings. He also delivered his first major league hit when he legged out an infield single in the fourth inning. Chen was 0-for-51 prior to the hit.
Curtis Granderson had an RBI single in the first inning while Yoenis Cespedes hit a solo homer in the eighth for the Mets.
Wheeler enjoyed a perfect first inning and was staked to a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the frame, when Asdrubal Cabrera singled with one out, advanced to second on a walk and scored on Granderson's two-out single.
The Marlins immediately responded in the second inning. With one out, Justin Bour walked and went to third on a single by Ozuna. Dietrich followed with a long two-run triple to center and came home on Adeiny Hechavarria's grounder to short.
Yelich hit a two-run homer in the third to extend the Marlins' lead to 5-1. Ozuna and Dietrich laced RBI singles off Josh Smoker in the fifth.
NOTES: Mets assistant minor league pitching coordinator Phil Regan threw batting practice Friday, one day after his 80th birthday. ... Friday was the fourth anniversary of late RHP Jose Fernandez making his major league debut for the Marlins against the Mets at Citi Field. Fernandez allowed one run and struck out eight in five innings and didn't factor into the decision in a 4-3 loss. Fernandez was killed in a boating accident on Sept. 25.
