Cubs 3, Reds 2
Kosuke Fukudome's two-out single capped a ninth-inning rally as the Chicago Cubs pulled out a 3-2 victory over the visiting Cincinnati Reds on Saturday afternoon.
Cincinnati starter Bronson Arroyo scattered seven hits and two walks over 7 1/3 innings, striking out three.
He was in line for his fourth win before Carlos Pena led off the bottom of the ninth with a home run to right against Francisco Cordero (2-1). Blake DeWitt followed with a one-out single, and after Jeff Baker's ground-rule double put runners on second and third with two out, Fukudome slapped a base hit up the middle to end it.
DeWitt's solo home run in the fourth inning gave the Cubs a 1-0 lead, but the Reds came back with a pair of runs in the seventh to seize the upper hand. Chris Heisey scored the tying run when Fred Lewis grounded into a fielder's choice and Drew Stubbs plated Lewis on a two-out single off reliever Kerry Wood.
Marcos Mateo (1-1) picked up the win after retiring the last four Cincinnati hitters in relief.
Chicago starter Casey Coleman worked six-plus innings and was charged for both of Cincinnati's seventh-inning runs after leaving a pair of runners for Wood.
