Reds 2, Cubs 0
Johnny Cueto tossed six scoreless innings in his first outing of the season as five Cincinnati pitchers combined for a 2-0 shutout over the host Chicago Cubs on Sunday afternoon.
The Reds opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI single by Ramon Hernandez. Drew Stubbs added a solo homer in the fifth against Ryan Dempster (1-4).
That was more than enough for Cueto (1-0). After missing the first month of the season with shoulder trouble, the righthander threw 102 pitches over six innings, allowing just five hits and a walk while striking out four.
Bill Bray, Sam LeCure, Nick Masset and Francisco Cordero limited the Cubs to one hit the rest of the way. Cordero worked a perfect ninth inning for his sixth save of the season.
Dempster lost despite surrendering just five hits over seven innings, striking out four.
