Padres 2, Rockies 1
Mat Latos pitched 8 2/3 strong innings as the San Diego Padres won for the fourth time in the last five games, 2-1 over the host Colorado Rockies on Tuesday.
Latos (8-14) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out nine. He held the Rockies scoreless until Jordan Pacheco singled with two outs in the ninth to plate Dexter Fowler.
Heath Bell came on to record the final out and his 40th save as Latos fell one out shy of recording his second career complete game.
Colorado also brought the go-ahead run to the plate with one out in the eighth, but Latos struck out pinch-hitter Troy Tulowitzki and got Eric Young Jr. to ground out to third base.
The Padres grabbed a 1-0 lead in the first on Orlando Hudson's two-out RBI single. Hudson scored the second San Diego run in the sixth on a double by Jeremy Hermida.
Jhoulys Chacin (11-13) allowed one earned run and scattered six hits in six innings.
Colorado, already without top hitters Carlos Gonzalez and Todd Helton, scratched shortstop Hector Gomez from Tuesday's lineup with a back injury.
San Diego first baseman Kyle Blanks left the game in the first after straining his right quadriceps.
