Tigers 8, White Sox 5: Prince Fielder went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs and Rick Porcello threw six solid innings as host Detroit won for the seventh time in nine games.
Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez also had three hits and an RBI apiece for the Tigers, who led 5-1 after three innings. Alex Avila recorded a two-run single and Austin Jackson tripled in a run as part of the 15-hit onslaught.
Porcello (6-6) made the early lead hold up by allowing three runs and seven hits while striking out six. Drew Smyly pitched a perfect eighth and Joaquin Benoit survived a pair of walks in the ninth to pick up his eighth save.
Gordon Beckham had a solo homer and a sacrifice fly and Conor Gillaspie slugged a solo shot for Chicago. Starter Dylan Axelrod (3-6) was charged with seven runs and 11 hits in 5 2/3 innings to fall to 0-2 with a 9.32 ERA in his last six outings.
Fielder set the tone with a two-run shot in the first and came in on Avila's two-run single in the third. Dayan Viciedo's RBI single highlighted a two-run rally for the White Sox in the fourth that made it 5-3. Cabrera, Fielder and Martinez had consecutive two-out RBI singles in the sixth to give the hosts some breathing room.
GAME NOTEBOOK: A night after he went 6-for-6, White Sox RF Alex Rios was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. ... The first five hitters in the Detroit lineup were a combined 13-for-23 with six RBIs. ... The series concludes Thursday afternoon as Chicago ace Chris Sale opposes Detroit's Anibal Sanchez.
