Yankees 5, Rangers 2

Freddy Garcia made his starting debut for the Yankees and shut down the visiting Texas Rangers in a 5-2 win on a rainy Saturday afternoon in New York.

Garcia (1-0), who had his first two scheduled starts rained out, allowed just two hits, one walk and struck out one in six scoreless innings against the American League’s best team in Texas (10-4). The 12-year veteran looked sharp from the get-go for his fifth team in four seasons, and New York (8-5) needed it after two straight short, sluggish outings from the back end of its rotation. Mariano Rivera closed out the game for his AL-leading sixth save.

Robinson Cano and Mark Teixeira both hit two-run homers off Derek Holland (2-1), who suffered just the second loss by a Texas starter. Teixeira’s first-inning blast was his AL-best fifth this season. Holland allowed five earned runs on eight hits and struck out five in 7 2/3 innings.
