Yankees 9, Rays 2
Jorge Posada made a thunderous return to the lineup, belting a grand slam and driving in six runs to power the New York Yankees to a 9-2 rout of the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday.
Playing for the first time since he was benched last weekend, Posada hit his 10th career grand slam to cap a five-run fifth inning after he delivered a two-RBI single in the second.
Curtis Granderson clubbed his fifth homer in five games, a solo shot that tied Toronto's Jose Bautista for the major league lead with 33 as the Yankees moved to within one game of Boston in the American League East.
Phil Hughes (3-4), pitching to stay in the starting rotation, earned his first home win of the year by allowing two runs on four hits in six innings to help snap Tampa Bay's five-game winning streak.
Posada had three hits and his slam was his first home run since June 29. His six RBIs were the most he's had in a game since September 2006.
Rays starter Jeremy Hellickson (10-8) had his three-game win streak halted and lost for the first time in six starts. He allowed four runs on eight hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Desmond Jennings homered for the Rays, who fell 8 1/2 games behind the Yankees in the AL wild card race.
