Braves 9, Nationals 8
Freddie Freeman lined a run-scoring single to right field with two outs in the ninth inning to give Atlanta a 9-8 walkoff win over Washington Sunday at Turner Field.
Freeman’s sharp single against reliever Ryan Mattheus (2-1) easily scored Martin Prado from second base and allowed the Braves to take two of three games from the Nationals. The winning pitcher was Craig Kimbrel (3-2), who struck out two of the three batters he faced.
The Braves tied the game at 8-8 with two outs in the eighth inning on Nate McLouth’s solo home run, his fourth, off reliever Tyler Clippard.
Washington had taken an 8-7 lead on Danny Espinosa’s two-run homer, his team-leading 17th, in the sixth. That came a half-inning after the Braves had rallied to score five runs - three of them coming on Brian McCann’s 16th homer - to take a 7-6 lead.
Atlanta starter Jair Jurrjens was knocked out after five innings as the All-Star was touched for eight hits and six runs in five innings.
