Cole Hamels continued his string of impressive starts while Jimmy Rollins sparked the offense for the Philadelphia Phillies en route to a 4-1 victory over the visiting Washington Nationals on Tuesday.
Placido Polanco, Ryan Howard and Raul Ibanez each drove in a run for the Phillies, who have won four of five.
Hamels (4-1) turned in his first complete game of the season while allowing one run on five hits and striking out six. After getting knocked around for six runs in 2 2/3 innings during his first start, Hamels has gone 4-0 with a 1.42 ERA over his last five.
Philadelphia got to Livan Hernandez (3-3) for a run in the third on Rollins’ RBI single and added another in the third when Polanco pushed Rollins across with a sacrifice fly. Rollins finished with two hits, a walk and a stolen base.
The Phillies provided some insurance in the seventh, pushing two across on Howard’s single and a double from Ibanez. Hernandez didn't make it out of the seventh, yielding four runs and 10 hits in 6 1/3 innings.
Jayson Werth went 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout in his return to Citizens Bank Park.
