Nationals 5, Phillies 4 (10)

Ian Desmond homered with two outs in the ninth inning and Jonny Gomes ended the contest after being hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the 10th as the Washington Nationals rallied for a 5-4 home triumph over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday.

Rookie Danny Espinosa homered and drove in two runs and Ryan Zimmerman collected his fifth RBI of the series as Washington took two of three from major league-leading Philadelphia.

After Zimmerman doubled to lead off the 10th against Brad Lidge (0-1), the Nationals loaded the bases on the veteran closer. After Lidge fanned Espinosa, he hit Gomes on the left elbow as the Nationals won in their final at-bat for the second time in three days.

Sean Burnett (4-5) pitched one scoreless inning of relief to pick up the win.

Carlos Ruiz belted a two-run homer, Chase Utley added a solo shot and Wilson Valdez had an RBI single for Philadelphia, which suffered its first road series loss since falling to the Seattle Mariners (June 17-19).

Adding injury to insult, the Phillies saw shortstop Jimmy Rollins exit the contest with a strained right groin. Rollins made a solid play to rob Jesus Flores of a hit in the second inning, but departed one inning later.
