Diamondbacks 3, Giants 2 (10)
Justin Upton hit a booming homer with one out in the bottom of the 10th inning to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a dramatic 3-2 victory over the visiting San Francisco Giants on Thursday.
Upton hit a fastball well over the right-center field fence off Giants reliever Santiago Casilla (0-1) to help Arizona beat the Giants for just the second time in nine meetings this season.
Upton’s homer was his 12th of the season and made a winner out of David Hernandez (3-2), who pitched a scoreless top of the 10th as Arizona moved within 1 1/2 games of San Francisco atop the National League West.
The Giants tied the game in the ninth on Pat Burrell’s sacrifice fly off Arizona closer J.J. Putz, who blew his third save in 21 opportunities.
Arizona starter Ian Kennedy pitched eight innings of four-hit ball and matched a season best with 10 strikeouts.
The lone run against Kennedy was unearned when Cody Ross and Nate Schierholtz worked a double steal in the fifth. Ross scored when Arizona catcher Miguel Montero’s poor throw got away from third baseman Ryan Roberts.
Chris Young hit a two-run homer off Giants starter Ryan Vogelsong in the fourth inning for a 2-0 lead.
Putz allowed back-to-back singles to Pablo Sandoval and Aubrey Huff to start the ninth. Putz struck out Ross but Sandoval scored easily from third on Burrell’s liner to left field.
Vogelsong gave up two runs and six hits in six innings. He struck out six and walked one.
