Tigers 4, Indians 2
Doug Fister recorded a career-high 13 strikeouts over eight innings and Victor Martinez hit a three-run homer, leading the Detroit Tigers to a 4-2 win over the Cleveland Indians on Monday.
The victory gave Detroit a 7 1/2 game lead over Cleveland in the American League Central. The Tigers have beaten the Indians five straight times.
Fister (7-13) allowed two runs on four hits and one walk. Jose Valverde pitched the ninth for his 41st consecutive save.
Ubaldo Jimenez (8-11) held Detroit to two hits in seven innings, but made one critical mistake in the fourth that cost him the game. Following a one-out single by Delmon Young and a walk to Miguel Cabrera, Martinez unloaded on a 2-2 pitch, driving the ball deep into the lower deck in right field.
Cabrera hit into an RBI fielder's choice in the eighth for Detroit's final run.
Grady Sizemore, playing for the first time in six weeks, had an RBI groundout in the fifth following Fister's throwing error. Kosuke Fukudome hit a solo home run in the eighth.
