Tim Stauffer pitched 6 1/3 shutout innings to earn his career-high seventh victory and the San Diego Padres avoided a series sweep with a 3-0 victory over the visiting Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday.

Stauffer (7-8) scattered six hits. Heath Bell worked a perfect ninth inning for his 31st save.

Jason Bartlett hit his second home run of the season in the sixth off Ted Lilly (7-11), who allowed one run on seven hits and struck out seven over six innings.

San Diego, which had lost five consecutive games to Los Angeles, recorded its sixth shutout and improved to 16-23 in one-run games. The Dodgers were blanked for the 11th time.

The Padres capitalized on two Dodgers' errors to score an insurance run in the seventh. San Diego added a run in the eighth on Jesus Guzman's single off Blake Hawksworth.
