Rays 3, Jays 1

David Price was one out away from his second career shutout and struck out 10 as the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the visiting Toronto Blue Jays 3-1 Thursday afternoon.

Price (4-3) carried a three-hitter into the ninth before a two-base throwing error by second baseman Sean Rodriguez, a single by Raji Davis and a groundout by Corey Patterson brought home John McDonald and spoiled the shutout bid.

Price left after 8 2/3 frames, yielding an unearned run and four hits without a walk in 118 pitches as he improved to 8-0 all-time against Toronto. Kyle Farnsworth got the final out for his sixth save.

Johnny Damon had two hits for 2,600 for his career and an RBI for the Rays, who won two of three in the series.

Rodriguez doubled to lead off the third inning for the Rays and scored on John Jaso’s double. Damon brought Jaso home with an infield single and Matt Joyce’s sacrifice fly gave Tampa Bay a 3-0 lead. Ben Zobrist, who walked and scored in the third, increased his hitting streak to 11 games with a single in the first inning.

Toronto starter Kyle Drabek (2-2) allowed three runs on six hits in 5 2/3 innings. The Blue Jays finished a 10-game road trip at 5-5.

Adam Lind extended his hit streak to 10 games with an infield single in the seventh for Toronto, which has not won a series at Tampa Bay since April of 2007.
