Blue Jays 3, Rays 2
Ricky Romero tossed seven outstanding innings and J.P. Arencibia hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the seventh as the Toronto Blue Jays posted a 3-2 victory over the visiting Tampa Bay Rays on Thursday.
Juan Rivera homered for Toronto, which snapped a two-game losing streak and handed Tampa Bay – the best road team in the majors - a rare loss away from Tropicana Field.
B.J. Upton and Kelly Shoppach homered for Tampa Bay, which lost for just the second time in its last 14 road games and fell to 14-6 away from home.
The Rays were stymied by Romero (4-4), who carried a no-hitter into the sixth inning of his last start. He followed that up by limiting Tampa Bay to one run and three hits in this one. The lefthander struck out six and walked two en route to his first in his last four starts at home.
Wade Davis (4-4) was nearly as good, except for the one mistake he made to Arencibia, who drilled his first pitch of the seventh inning off the windows in center field for his seventh homer of the season.
Shoppach’s solo shot on a 2-2 sinker from Marc Rzepczynski cut the lead to 3-2 in the eighth, but Frank Francisco threw a perfect ninth for his fifth save in six chances this season.
Davis allowed three runs and seven hits in 7 2/3 innings.
