Tigers 6, Rangers 5
Brennan Boesch hit a solo homer in the eighth inning and Alex Avila drove in three to lift the Detroit Tigers to a 6-5 victory over the visiting Texas Rangers on Tuesday.
Victor Martinez added two hits and an RBI for the Tigers, who have won three of four.
The Rangers were considered one of the big winners of the trade deadline when they worked deals to bring in relievers Koji Uehara and Mike Adams. Adams (0-1) did not make such a good first impression on his team when he came on in the eighth and left a 1-2 pitch hanging over the middle of the plate.
Boesch sent a line drive deep into the right field seats for his 16th homer, snapping a 5-5 deadlock.
Texas had tied it in the top of the eighth when the Detroit bullpen faltered. Joaquin Benoit surrendered a solo homer to Nelson Cruz -his 24th - and a two-run shot to Mike Napoli.
Benoit (3-3) ended up with a blown save and the win.
Jose Valverde worked the ninth for his 29th save.
