Athletics 3, Mariners 0

Brandon McCarthy pitched his second career shutout and Cliff Pennington had a two-run double as the Oakland Athletics registered a 3-0 victory over the visiting Seattle Mariners on Saturday.

McCarthy (8-7) struck out 10 to match his career high and walked none while winning for the seventh time in nine decisions. The complete game was the fourth of the season for McCarthy, who set a personal high for victories.

McCarthy has fanned 10 batters in two consecutive starts.

Scott Sizemore added a fifth-inning homer as Oakland defeated Seattle for the second straight day.

Hideki Matsui and David DeJesus singled in the fourth prior to Pennington delivering a two-run double to left off Seattle rookie Michael Pineda (9-9).

Pineda, who defeated Oakland twice earlier this season, gave up three runs and five hits in six innings. He struck out seven and walked two.

Pineda has just one victory over his last nine outings. The Mariners plan to start him just twice the rest of the season before shutting him down.
