Nick Swisher hit a walk-off single with two out in the ninth inning to lift host Cleveland and make Justin Masterson a complete-game winner.
Masterson (3-0), who in his first two starts this season became the third major-league pitcher to defeat both reigning Cy Young Award winners in the same season, allowed five hits in nine innings to lower his ERA to 0.41. He had seven strikeouts and induced 14 groundouts.
Masterson outdueled Chicago starter Jose Quintana, who allowed one hit and no runs in seven innings. The only player to get beyond first base against the left-hander was Michael Brantley, who doubled with two outs in the second.
Michael Bourn laced a double to left with one out in the ninth off reliever Jesse Crain (0-1). Asdrubal Cabrera grounded to second, moving Bourn to third, and Jason Kipnis was intentionally walked in front of Swisher, who banged the first pitch into right field.
The White Sox got their leadoff batter on base in four of the first eight innings but couldn’t capitalize. Their best chance came in the eighth, when Conor Gillaspie was stranded on third after leading off the inning with a double.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Swisher has hit safely in the last 19 games at Progressive Field. … The White Sox had two players gunned down on the basepaths. Alex Rios was caught trying to stretch a single into a double with two outs in the first inning and Cleveland C Yan Gomes threw out Alexei Ramirez trying to steal second in the sixth. … Gomes was recalled from Triple-A Columbus after Lou Marson went on the 15-day disabled list with a neck injury, which occurred Saturday during a collision at home plate with Desmond Jennings of the Tampa Bay Rays. Gomes is the first Brazilian-born player in the major leagues.
