Indians 4, White Sox 3
Nick Swisher singled in the go-ahead run in the eighth inning and Jason Kipnis added a two-run blast as visiting Cleveland topped Chicago for the third time in the last two days.
Asdrubal Carbrera added a solo homer and scored twice for the Indians, who piled up 28 runs in taking both ends of a doubleheader on Friday. Joe Martinez (1-0), who was called up from Triple-A Columbus earlier on Saturday, recorded two scoreless innings to earn the win in relief and Chris Perez worked a perfect ninth for his seventh save.
Dayan Viciedo broke out of a slump with three hits and an RBI and Conor Gillaspie and Tyler Flowers each drove in a run for the White Sox.
Chicago grabbed a 3-1 lead in the fifth on back-to-back RBI singles off Cleveland starter Ubaldo Jimenez. The Indians got those runs back in the next half-inning when Kipnis, who drove in four runs in the two games on Friday, blasted a first-pitch slider from Dylan Axelrod over the bullpens in right-center.
Swisher, whose solo home run capped a four-run rally in the ninth inning of Friday’s nightcap, put his team on top again with a single up the middle off Jesse Crain (2-3) in the eighth that scored Cabrera. The base hit snapped Crain’s stretch of 31 straight appearances without allowing an earned run.
GAME NOTEBOOK: Jimenez was battered for three runs on nine hits in five innings while Axelrod lasted six frames, allowing three runs on five hits. … Chicago recalled RHP Simon Castro from Triple-A Charlotte and optioned RHP Brian Omogrosso to the minors. … Martinez took the bullpen spot of RHP Matt Longwell, who was sent back to Triple-A after allowing a pair of runs in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader.
