Mariners 8, Athletics 4
Dustin Ackley doubled, tripled and drove in three runs, and fellow rookie Blake Beavan made yet another quality start as the Seattle Mariners posted an 8-4 victory over the visiting Oakland Athletics on Monday night.
Beavan (2-2) allowed three straight singles to start the game but escaped the first inning unscathed. The 22-year-old yielded three runs in 6 2/3 innings to join Michael Pineda as the only Mariners to begin their careers with five quality starts.
The Mariners gave Beavan a comfortable lead with a five-run outburst in the second. Franklin Gutierrez and Brendan Ryan, who had three hits, each drove in a run before Ackley tripled with the bases loaded.
Trevor Cahill (9-10) lost for the fifth time in six decisions as he surrendered seven runs and 12 hits in four-plus innings.
Kurt Suzuki had a homer and two RBIs for Oakland, which failed to score at least five runs for the first time in nine games.
