Mariners 4, Athletics 2
Jason Vargas struck out 10 over eight strong innings and Justin Smoak hit a three-run homer as the Seattle Mariners snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 win over the visiting Oakland Athletics on Monday night.
The A's took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jemile Weeks led off with a double and scored on a one-out base hit by Hideki Matsui.
Vargas (10-13), though, allowed just three more hits the rest of the way, retiring 15 of the last 16 batters he faced and not allowing another Oakland runner past first base.
Miguel Olivo tied the game in the fifth with a solo home run against Brandon McCarthy (9-9), before Smoak broke the deadlock with two out in the sixth by driving a 1-0 pitch to right field.
Brandon League allowed a run on two hits in the top of the ninth but held on to pick up his 37th save.
McCarthy worked eight innings in defeat, yielding eight hits while striking out six without a walk.
