Yankees 6, Orioles 5 (10)
Nick Swisher’s 10th-inning sacrifice fly off Mike Gonzalez lifted the New York Yankees to a 6-5 comeback victory over the visiting Baltimore Orioles and a two-game series sweep Thursday night.
Alex Rodriguez went 3-for-3 and belted a double off Gonzalez (0-1) to move Mark Teixeira to third base and in position to score the winning run.
The biggest hit for the Yankees (7-4), though, came off the bat of Jorge Posada, who lifted a solo home run off Kevin Gregg to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Yankees closer Mariano Rivera (1-0) pitched a scoreless top of the 10th for his first win.
Nick Markakis hit a home run and drove in three runs to double his RBI total for Baltimore (6-5), which blew a 5-0 lead and dropped its fourth straight. Starter Jake Arrieta allowed three earned runs on five hits and struck out two in six innings.
Phil Hughes avoided a third straight loss for New York but has yet to make it out of the fifth inning. The righthander was booed when he exited after giving up five earned runs on seven hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Bartolo Colon, who may take Hughes’ spot in the rotation, threw three strikeouts in three scoreless innings of relief while Joba Chamberlain made a key tag at home to prevent any more Baltimore runs.
