Yankees 3, Orioles 2
Mark Teixeira knocked in his 100th run of the season, and Freddy Garcia threw six sensational innings as the New York Yankees edged the host Baltimore Orioles 3-2 Monday night.
The win moved the Yankees to within a game and a half of idle Boston atop the American League East. The teams begin a three-game series Tuesday night at Fenway Park.
Teixeira reached the milestone with a double to right field in the first inning, extending his streak of 30-homer, 100-RBI seasons to eight. The veteran first baseman has driven in 11 runs over his last 11 games and has 21 RBIs in 26 August contests.
Garcia (11-7) took over from there, limiting the Orioles to one run on two hits en route to his fourth consecutive victory. Mariano Rivera worked the ninth for his 34th save.
Alfredo Simon (4-7) was the hard-luck loser, limiting New York to three runs on four hits over seven strong innings.
Nick Swisher provided the game's pivotal blow with a two-run shot to right field in the fourth, his 21st homer and sixth in the last seven games.
Mark Reynolds and J.J. Hardy had solo homers for Baltimore.
