Brewers 5, Cardinals 3
Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks homered in support of Zack Greinke as the Milwaukee Brewers crept closer to first place in the National League Central with a 5-3 victory over the visiting St. Louis Cardinals on Saturday.
Corey Hart added a two-run double and John Axford posted his 17th save of the season for the Brewers, who moved within one-half game of the Cardinals for the division lead.
Greinke (6-1) outdueled Chris Carpenter (1-6) as he continued to display pinpoint control. Milwaukee’s new ace surrendered three runs on seven hits but struck out nine and did not walk a batter in seven innings.
Greinke has struck out 60 while issuing just seven walks in 48 total innings with the Brewers.
Carpenter’s struggles continued as he permitted five runs in six frames.
St. Louis led briefly after Lance Berkman’s solo blast in the sixth, but Milwaukee responded with four runs in the bottom of that frame to take control.
Fielder’s solo shot in the second was his 18th of the season and seventh in the last nine games.
